Object Desciption This is the Aviators Flight Logbook of Lieutenant John J. Ballentine during his training periods at NAS Pensacola, FL, Kelly Field, Texas, and Yorktown, Va. From Yorktown, he conducted bombing runs on the German ships, Frankfurt and Ostfrieland, during the bombing tests in July 1921. The log continues with his flights while stationed at Hampton Roads, VA, and Dahlgren, VA.
Notes "Graduating from the Naval Academy in the Class of 1918, Vice Admiral John Ballentine was
designated Naval Aviator Number 2878 on 22 November 1920. A former torpedo pilot, he served
as skipper of Bunker Hill (CV-17) during 1943-1944, seeing action in the Gilbert and Marshall
Islands and at Rabaul. Promoted to flag rank, Ballentine assumed the post of Chief of Staff
to Commander Air Force, Pacific Fleet. He also served as Commander Fleet Air, Seattle, and
ComCarDiv 7. His postwar billets included Commader, Sixth Fleet, and Commander, Air Force,
Atlantic Fleet."
